Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011)

I saw the previews for this last year and I liked that they used Muse’s “Starlight” for the trailer. I’m a big Steve Carell fan and I love Emma Stone so I told myself I’d go see it.

Of course, I never got around to it.

After borrowing it from a classmate two months ago (eek!) and letting it sit on my shelf, I finally decided to watch it. I’m really glad I did.

This is not your average romcom.

The dialogue was flawless. Dialogue is always one of my biggest beefs in romcoms (characterization aside) since some lines sound so cliche and I ask myself, “Did they really just say that?” The great thing about this movie is that they call themselves out on that. Regularly. It’s incredibly refreshing.

The humor at times was that awkward, real life humor that you’re not supposed to write about. The scene with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling at his lavish bachelor pad is a key example but it worked and it was perfect. Most importantly, it was believable. I bought it.

Steve Carell as fortysomething Cal Weaver was a perfect casting choice. In fact, this whole movie was perfectly cast. All the characters were incredibly convincing, from Gosling’s Jacob Palmer to the Weaver’s son, Robbie (played by Jonah Bobo).

While the “twist” in act II was predictable, it didn’t take me out of the movie at all. Everything flowed really well and the pacing was good. I’m a watch checker during movies and I’m happy to say that I did not once look at the time.

Verdict: Buy
